Kedua sertifikasi yang paling umum adalah Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Biayanya berkisar sekitar US$ 150-US$ 250.

For those of you heading to Singapore, US, UK or Australia for your higher education, English is a must. You will need to be certified that you are good enough in English in order to apply for your course, if English is not your mother tongue. The two most common certifications are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Both are standardized English language tests aimed at pre-university students to evaluate how you can combine your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills in English.

For academic purposes (i.e. for college admissions) it is up to the student to choose which test to take (no need to do both!), as both examinations are widely accepted. Both cost around US$150-US$250. However, there are some key differences that you should note:

  • For those going to Australia, England, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand, you should take the IELTS exam as the TOEFL is not accepted in many academic institutions.

  • For the Speaking portion of the test, for IELTS, you are expected to converse with the IELTS examiner face to face. For TOEFL, the speaking test consists of six questions which you answer into a microphone. These are recorded and sent to an examiner to mark. So it depends on which style you are more comfortable with.

  • TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service, a non-profit US based organisation, and conducts its test according to US English. IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations andIDP Education Australia, and conducts its test in UK English. The difference in accents and spelling variations can cause a problem if you are not used to it.

  • The TOEFL test takes around 4 hours, while the IELTS is shorter at 2 hours 45 minutes. How good is your stamina?

TOEFL: http://www.englishclub.com/esl-exams/ets-toefl-tips.htm

IELTS: http://www.ielts-exam.net/ielts-facts.htm

Pada dasarnya, Anda harus;

  1. Praktek, praktek, praktek!

The teachers in these schools will give you tips on how to ace the test. However, you can also do it yourself with textbooks and sample test practices available on the internet. There are also websites that give good tips on what you should do:

TOEFL: http://www.englishclub.com/esl-exams/ets-toefl-tips.htm

IELTS: http://www.ielts-exam.net/ielts-facts.htm

Generally, you must:

  1. Practice, practice, practice! This is so that you will be familiar with the format of the tests and not be stressed by a “strange” test. This will also build up your stamina as the tests take a long time. You must be able to remain alert throughout the test session, and this will take some training.
  2. Be aware of the time – don’t spend too much time on one question.
  3. Speaking test – practice with a friend or mentor so you can be more comfortable with the language.
  4. Sleep well and eat well before the test – you will need the strength!

IELTS have created a system for failing people and making money, specially in the reading part, where they can apply very subjective criteria.
